Two clarinets, bassett horn and bass clarinett – this unique lineup, based on the string quartet, enables the vienna clarinet connection to create a colorful sound range as well as an exciting tension between the soloist’s individuality and chamber musical ensemble playing.

Thus Helmut Hödl, Rupert Fankhauser, Hubert Salmhofer and Wolfgang Kornberger have achieved an inspiring symbiosis of composed and improvised music with elements of traditional and contemporary classical music, jazz and pop. The ensemble, founded in 1995, has remained faithful to  this concept of flowing transitions  between styles until today. With their own compositions and arrangements which make up the main part of their repertoire vienna clarinet connection have found their own, unique musical language.

So the four musicians have set new standards , have become trailblazers for the genre of the clarinet quartet and have made an important contribution to this lineup in international concert life. Their creative and varied programmes along with an entertaining and humorous presentation on stage make sure that the audiences will experience an extraordinary concert event.

Projects with actors Karl Markovics, Martina Gedeck and Robert Meyer, singers Sandra Pires, Peter Gabis, Matthias Schorn (solo clarinettist of the Vienna Philharmonic) as well as the Vienna State Ballet and the Volksoper Wien Bigband are proof of the quartet’s variety.

Vienna clarinet connection have played concerts at the Muikverein Wien, Konzerthaus Wien, Brucknerhaus Linz, at the Schleswig-Holstein and the Rheingau Music Festivals and have taken part in the opening ceremony of the Salzburger Festspiele. They were touring in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, France, Turkey, Croatia, Poland and Scandinavia.

In addition the musicians have appeared on radio and television, for instance at the ORF “Treffpunkt Kultur” and Ö1 “Klassik Treffpunkt”.

Solo works with orchestra are also part of the vienna clarinet connection’s repertoire. The ensemble has played with the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Württenbergische Phiharmonie, the Symphony Orchestra of Vorarlberg, the Zürich Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra and Philharmonia Wien. With conductors Gabriel Feltz, Ola Rudner, Gerard Korsten, Daniel Inbal and Herbert Böck they have performed  at Tonhalle Zürich, Konzerthaus Berlin, Festspielhaus Bregenz and many others.

Their discography also reflects the many facets of the quartet. These reach from new compositions such as “Czernowitzer Skizzen” by Alexander Kukelka via “Café Europa”, “Out of”... to experimental sounds with double bass, keyboard and drums on the album “Electric Woods”. They got rave reviews by critics and audiences for their current production “Clarinets à la King”, an homage to Benny Goodman. The members of vienna clarinet connection have conveyed their many years of experience as soloists and chamber music players in regular workshops. Since 2008 ClariArte, a festival dedicated to the clarinet has taken place in the Austrian town of Hartberg.
