Helmut Hödl studied the clarinet at the Music Academies of Vienna and Graz. After finishing his studies with excellence he won the Karl-Böhm-Award of the City of Graz. Since 1993 Hödl has held the position of solo clarinettist in the orchestra of the Volksoper in Vienna.
He has been invited by numerous prestigious orchestras as a solo clarinettist for various projects (Bamberg Symphonic Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonics, Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonics, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg). As a soloist and chamber musician he has been touring worldwide since his 18th birthday.
From his student days clarinet chamber music has been important to Hödl. He was a founding member of Trio Clarin, quintett.wien, vienna five and is the founder of vienna clarinet connection and vienna chamber players.
Helmut Hödl has received invitatons to teach master classes and workshops from all over the world.
Since 1997 Hödl has been active as a composer. He writes for chamber music ensembles, orchestras and solo instruments. He has been invited to compose for the Jeunesse Musicale, the piano duo Kutrovatz, Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra, Haydn Trio Eisenstadt, the Vienna State Ballet etc.
These pieces have turned into classics of the literature for clarinet quartet and thus given a big boost to this genre over the past 10 years.
From 2007-2015 Helmut Hödl was acting chief executive of the Volksoper Wien Symphony Orchestra.
In 2020 his solo CD “reflected” will be released by Preiser Records
